2017 Social Media Strategy Guide to Maximizing Engagement for Your Nonprofit

There are very few hard-and-fast rules for Facebook, but one has held true since it started in early 2004:

Facebook is always changing.

Why? Facebook’s primary purpose – beyond getting more advertising revenue or general world domination – is to keep its users engaged. It wants them happy and staying on Facebook for as long as possible. It never wants them to feel bored or like they are seeing the same old thing over and over.

To do that, Facebook is always tweaking the computerized rules that dictate who gets to see what on their newsfeed. The somewhat daunting collective name of all these rules is the Facebook algorithm.

To make sure you keep up with Facebook’s changes, I’m providing my 2017 what’s working now social media strategy guide to make sure you have the most current information and how to use it so that your nonprofit is being seen (and heard) on the world’s largest social media platform.

That “and heard” part is important, because one of the biggest changes to Facebook’s preferences is that you start to engage your followers with video. You don’t need to post every day anymore (which is great) but you need to start making sure that your posts are more in-depth and substantive. That they are the types of posts that will generate likes, comments, shares and clicks.

The best way to do that is with moving images.

Here’s the good news for those of you who are shy about being on camera. You can include a video today posing in front of your smart phone. There are tools and methods of creating moving images that capitalize on resources you already have that can easily be made into a video. This guide shows you how.

And when you are ready to take the leap and star in your own video, I have a slew of suggestions of things that you can easily talk about that will make the process less painful. You are the passionate leader of an organization that is doing good in the world. Believe me, you have a lot of great things you can discuss that will make compelling, engaging video.

Once you create the videos, you can use them in almost any aspect of your social media marketing. They can be posts, the cover of your Facebook page, and the basis of any Facebook ads you want to run promoting your cause.

My guide gives you an analysis of the changes in the Facebook algorithm, suggestions on what to embrace and what to discard, and links to some of the best tools out there for creating videos that will capture the attention of Facebook users.
