Are you a marketing follower or a leader? Early in my career, I’m afraid I was a follower, deferring to my boss or my board on their marketing ideas - even when I knew in my heart of hearts that their strategy (or overall dismissal of marketing) was misguided.

But as a smart marketer you need to also be a leader, capable of gently persuading others of the value marketing has for your organization. It’s not above your pay grade - it’s essential to your role and it will powerfully affect the impact your organization has.

But here’s the trick - it’s not about saying they are wrong and you are right. It’s about identifying their reasons for distrusting marketing (or, almost as bad, treating “better marketing” as a cure all that can fix anything) and addressing those underlying (mis)perceptions.

This is a very personal podcast and in it I share the lessons I learned the hard way, so hopefully I can save you some time and frustration.
